The Alternative South Island Diary

Next stop Kaikoura

We start our journey south from Blenheim at 10.30am for Kaikoura, well that's the time that you have to check-out from the camp accommodation, and with a 180km journey ahead of us, we thought we'd make the most of the day so as to enjoy the afternoon at Kaikoura. It was all very exciting, the anticipation of Whale-Watching, something none of us had experienced before.

The Journey

On the journey we passed all sorts of sights that we hadn't encountered before, it is such a different Island to the North. The roads are once again twisty-and-turny but there are new discoveries everywhere. We passed some commercial salt-lake fields, the colours of pinks and purple are mesmerising.

Take a Break

Of course, on a journey like this there must be a break somewhere. There aren't many true resaurants between Blenheim and Kaikora but we discovered one which is worth stopping at, if not just for the views. But I recommend the food here too. It's name is 'The Store' at Kekerengu - (Marlborough) which is situated about 100km toward Kaikoura. Brunch was served, whilst sitting over-looking the South Pacific - Wow, absolutely awesome views!

The Wildlife

Back in the car fully refreshed and heads full of our first real taste of the South Islands offerings we set-off down the meandering coast road to Kaikoura. We notice people pulling over all along the coastal road and starring down' into the ocean. What are they looking at? Well, we too decided to stop instead of rubber-necking and how glad we were. All along the pebble beach were beautiful seals, basking in the sun. Just keeps getting better.

I was truly amazed by this and still look at our pictures we took that day.

Next: Venture to Parau
