The Alternative South Island Diary
And so we venture on our 15 hour journey home
Never forget that your journey by road from the South Island is going to be a long one. The journey is not stressfull or boring but long, if you're travelling like us back to the Bay of Plenty. We set-off early in the morning with a three-hour drive to Picton from Hanmer.
This time we got to Picton promptly. We opted to take the 'Lynx' back. It is a Jet-foil boat, knocking an hour off the ferry schedule. It costs about $100 more but when all you want to do is get home I think it's worth it.
We picked up a few sites on the way back and again enjoyed the sites that the ferry itself has to offer, clouds in the hills etc.
We had lots of fun, but were glad to be getting back to the comforts of our house on the North Island. We had travelled near to 1500kms in the Soutrh Island (plus 1500kms in the North Island getting there and back) and the back of the car was getting a bit heavy on the kids.
